When the dentist starts talking to you about dental implants, you may have a lot of questions. One of those questions may be about the many different ways that dental implants can be done. Dr. Jason Botts in Cordova wants you to be informed about the different types of dental implants available.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a permanent alternative to dentures for missing teeth. Dental implants use a metal frame or post that is placed Dental Implantsinto the jawbone. The post or frame behaves like a root to your replacement teeth. Once the implant is placed, the implant will fuse to your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. Osseointegration can take several months, but this is what will make your dental implants so strong and secure, giving you the look and feel of natural teeth.

Types of Dental Implants

  • Full Upper Replacements - This would involve replacing the full upper set of teeth with dental implants.
  • Full Lower Replacements - This would involve replacing the full lower set of teeth with dental implants.
  • Full Upper and Lower Replacements - This procedure would be used to replace both the upper and lower sets of teeth with dental implants.
  • Anterior Replacements - This involves replacing the front teeth, usually the cuspids and incisors, with dental implants.
  • Posterior Replacements - This involves replacing the back teeth in the mouth, usually the molars and the bicuspids, with dental implants.
  • Single Tooth Replacement - A dental implant can be used to replace a single missing tooth anywhere in the mouth.
Once the dental implants are placed and time has been allowed for the implants to fuse to the bone, then replacement teeth will be attached to the implants.

In order to be a candidate for dental implants, you must have enough bone to support the implants and have healthy gums. Once the implants are placed, you must practice good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily. You should continue to schedule regular check-ups with your dentist.
