What your dentist in Cordova wants you to know about taking care of your smileoral hygiene

It’s easy to practice good oral hygiene habits. In fact, an excellent oral hygiene routine only needs a few minutes, but the results are more than worth the effort. Dr. Jason Botts at Botts Dental Spa in Cordova, TN wants to share what it takes to care for your oral health and maintain your beautiful smile.

The goal of any good oral hygiene routine is to remove plaque as frequently and completely as possible. That’s because plaque contains millions of bad bacteria that can produce toxins. These bacterial toxins are strong enough to infect your soft tissue and cause inflammation, gum disease and ultimately periodontal disease.

These same bacterial toxins can also combine with the sugar in the foods you eat and produce an acid. This acid is strong enough to damage tough tooth enamel, causing tooth decay and damage to your smile.

Now that you know why you should keep good oral hygiene habits, how do you do it? That’s easy. Just remember to:

Brush after meals and before bed with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush gently in a circular motion, cleaning each tooth surface and along the gumline.

Floss at least once each day using waxed or unwaxed floss. Make sure you wrap the floss around each tooth as you floss. This wrapping technique helps to guide the floss along the tooth surface and reach deep down in between your teeth.

You can add a fluoride mouthrinse at night before you go to bed. Let the mouthrinse coat your teeth while you sleep to give the fluoride enough time to help remineralize your tooth enamel.

Make sure to visit your dentist at least yearly for a comprehensive dental exam, and your dental hygienist at least twice yearly for a professional cleaning.

When you keep good oral hygiene habits you are taking an important step toward enjoying a healthy smile for years to come. For more information on oral hygiene and other dental issues call Dr. Botts at Botts Dental Spa in Cordova, TN. Get started on a healthier smile by calling today!
